Have you ever experienced nagging lower body pain that just won’t go away? You might have had a bout of sciatica. It’s a catch-all term that encompasses lower body pain, numbness, and tingling that occurs down one or both legs all the way to the foot.
At 479 Chiropractic & Wellness, to determine what’s going on, we do a full exam and consult. If the leg itself is not tender, Dr. Zac will look at the lower back for signs of dysfunction.
Most of the time, Dr. Zac does AP/PA and lateral X-rays of the lumbar spine to see if there’s compression or nerve root irritation. Many times, the dysfunction is from the glutes or piriformis muscle.
Dr. Zac will also educate you on how to improve your posture and ergonomics, and provide guidance on activities of daily living you can do at home to help you recover faster. For example, if you’re traveling, we advise you to stop and stretch regularly, and if you’re sitting at a desk for long periods of time, take frequent breaks to move around.
Dr. Zac has a patient who has been suffering from lower back pain for years, and it turned out that he had some muscle imbalances that contributed to his sciatica. With some stretches and exercises at home, in addition to continuing his chiropractic care, we helped him manage his symptoms and get back to doing the things he loves pain-free.
